✅ Step-by-Step Guide: Apostille and Legalization for UAE via VFS Global

⚠️ Important Note:

The UAE is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so documents must be authenticated and legalizednot apostilled.

🔹 STEP 1: Determine the Document Type

VFS Global (VRF) separates the document types into:

  • Personal Documents (e.g., birth certificates, marriage certificates, diplomas)
  • Educational Documents
  • Commercial/Corporate Documents

Each category has its own authentication steps.

🔹 STEP 2: Get Your Document Notarized (if required)

If your document is not already official, it must be notarized by a licensed notary public:

  • For personal documents like affidavits or translations.
  • For copies of official documents (e.g., passports, licenses).

🔹 STEP 3: State Authentication (Secretary of State)

For documents issued in a U.S. state:

  1. Submit the notarized or certified document to your Secretary of State for authentication.
  2. This step confirms the notary or issuing official is valid in that state.

Skip this step if you’re using a federal document (like an FBI background check or Certificate of Naturalization).

🔹 STEP 4: U.S. Department of State Authentication

All documents must be authenticated by the U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications.

  • Send your state-authenticated or federal document to: U.S. Department of State, Office of Authentications
  • Processing time: ~10–12 business days (can be expedited through third parties).

🔹 STEP 5: Submit to VFS Global (VRF) for UAE Embassy Legalization

After U.S. Department of State authentication, your document goes to VFS Global, who will:

  • Submit the document to the UAE Embassy in Washington, D.C.
  • Return the legalized document to you

  • Payment for UAE Embassy fees (varies by document type)
  • Prepaid return envelope (FedEx or UPS recommended)

Educational documents must meet extra criteria (see below).
